A Window into God's World

My father heart cried when I saw the picture of little Aylan Kurdi washed up on the shores of Turkey. I wondered why it was that his and his father’s cry for a better life was not heard when he was still alive? Why is it the case that an innocent’s death is the eloquence we need, in order for our own hearts finally to respond with care? Why did we not realize before it was too late? What else are we not realizing about the direness of our human condition? As......

A New Thing at Carthage

Since August this year, I have spent much time and energy on the campus of Carthage College, a small liberal arts school on the north side of Kenosha. I have prayed, fasted, walked, run, biked, played basketball, lifted weights, cheered at volleyball games, cooked hot dogs, eaten breakfast, lunch, and dinner, drank coffee, led Bible studies, spoken at large groups, taken naps at the library, and fairly often wondered what the heck I should be doing. Regardless of the worth of these activities (and others that deserve no mention), there’s always been......

Pledge On Transfiguration Sunday

We are crossing an important milestone this year as we intentionally raise support for Father Eirik’s full-time ministry to Light of Christ. How exciting! This step is an affirmation of our mission to reach our communities with the love, hope, and healing of Jesus Christ. This past Sunday, we were encouraged by the Apostle Peter’s declaration that we are a royal priesthood. One way we express our priesthood is by offering ourselves: our spiritual gifts, resources and prayers. On the final Sunday of Epiphany, February 15th, we will ask you to pledge......

A Story of Healing

Part 3 of our Stories of Love, Hope and Healing focuses on healing. This is Dan Cornelius’ story. When Dan Cornelius first began coming to Light of Christ, he was struggling to break free from drug addictions that had begun with prescription drugs. Consequently, his marriage had ended and his visitation rights to see his children had been suspended. Dan says he knew God was going to help him overcome his addictions, but he was waiting on God’s timing. When he came to Light of Christ, he knew it was time. “It felt like......

A Story of Hope

Part 2 of our Stories of Love, Hope and Healing focuses on hope. This is Rowan Conley’s story. Rowan Conley grew up in a Christian family in Colorado. Through her teen years she became extremely rebellious and turned away from her faith in God and the church. At the age of 18 she found herself pregnant and due to family expectations, she was married and raising a family by 19. She moved to Kenosha shortly after her first marriage and subsequently was divorced within a few years. After that marriage failed, Rowan’s......

A Story of Love

To go along with our 3-part sermon series on our vision statement, we will be posting stories of love, hope and healing that feature members of our own congregation. (If you have a story to share, please contact Jeanne Olsen or Lisa Traylor.) We’ll begin with a story of LOVE, from the Kirk family. (Dan has shared this story on his family blog, as well as with an Anglican publication called The Wave, the quarterly magazine of AMIA. But it bears repeating!) When the Kirks first came to Light of Christ, they were nervous. Their son Edmund......
