Lent for Families

Lent for Families

Since we’ve been spending more time together in our homes, it makes sense to engage in a Lenten discipline as a family and to think out-of-the box on creative ways to engage our longing for God. Here are a few ideas on start with; what does your family do to keep Lent?

  • Decorate
    • Cover crosses in your home with black fabric or tulle.
    • Hang a cross “wreath” on your door.
    • Move or put a favorite piece of religious artwork in a place where you’ll see it frequently.
    • Put a Lenten icon on your desk or in your kitchen.
    • Use Lent-appropriate colors for your linens, i.e. your tablecloth, runner, placemats, decorative pillows, towels, etc. Appropriate colors include purple, black, grey, dark red, earth tones and/or burlap (instead of sackcloth).
    • As a family, decide on a one-word theme for Lent, such as longing, peace, love, etc. Print out that word and have your children decorate it. Display it prominently where your family will see it, such as in your living or dining room and use it as a way to start family conversations.
  • Add
    • Do family prayers before or after dinner.
    • Light candles for each week of Lent (like an Advent wreath).
    • Do movie nights watching films with themes of redemption and longing. (Ideas here and here; please use parental discretion!)
    • Set up weekly “family visits” with loved ones you don’t often see–can be in-person or virtual!
  • Delete
    • Give up something as a family: candy, soda, music in the car, screen time, etc.
    • Fast on Fridays by going meatless. Make it a simple meal your children can help you prepare.
  • Give alms
    • Set a piggy bank or box in your pantry to remind you of the need of others as you make meals.
    • Put a jar next to where you set down your keys and empty your pockets for loose change.
    • Clean out your pantry and donate unopened food to a local food bank. Children could sort through their toys as well.
