Our Preparations for Palm Sunday

With our distribution of the reserve sacrament on Palm Sunday, we want to minimize any possibility of coronavirus transmission in the process. A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that coronavirus can remain viable for up to 72 hours on hard services such as plastics. Our plan for Sunday is based on those findings, as we have intentionally built in additional time between handling these items.

What we’re doing

By the end of day Wednesday, we’ll put together packets of wafers for each family and deliver them to the Olsen home. (Before Wednesday evening.)

By Thursday morning Fr. Eirik will bless the sacrament. The communion is placed in a closed cardboard box in an out-of-the-way area–properly reverenced–until Sunday morning.

On Friday, we will take delivery of the palms. They will be stored in an out-of-the-way area, covered in plastic, until Sunday morning.

Sunday morning, a member of the Olsen family brings the closed communion box to Kemper Center, where the wafer packets are transferred to a sanitized area. The palms come to the Kemper center with the outer surface of the bucket sanitized and the palms touched only by gloved hands.

Our team will carefully wash their hands, put on clean rubber gloves and masks prior to distribution.

As you come into the Kemper parking lot, our distribution crew, will give you your reserve sacrament and Palms.

The Kemper Center itself will be closed to everyone except those assisting with the distribution.

If you are in any way uncomfortable with these arrangements and would still like to receive communion, please contact office@lightofchristkenosha.org.

How you can help

  • Remain in your own car while at Kemper. We would prefer you send a family representative if your family will find that difficult.
  • Maintain social distancing. As you park, keep 6 ft between each car.
